Email Contact from the I.R.S.

The IRS does not initiate contact by email, nor do they use email to request detailed personal information.  If you receive an email that appears to be from the Internal Revenue Service, from someone claiming to be from the I.R.S., or directing you to an "official" I.R.S. website, you should:

  • Not reply
  • not open any attachments
  • not click on any links
  • report the bogus scam

If you receive an email or website that you think is pretending to be the I.R.S., you should forward the website URL or the email to the Internal Revenue Service at phishing@irs.gov

You should then delete the message after forwarding it.

Samples of actual phishing emails, as well as additional information regarding identity theft, fraud, and assistance in verifying actual I.R.S. websites can be found at www.irs.gov
